Authoritarianism vs. Democracy

The meme I made shows a highway split to explain two political systems: authoritarianism and democracy. The left arrow is labeled “Authoritarianism,” showing a system where leaders control most things, and people have fewer freedoms. The right arrow is labeled “Democracy,” representing a system where people have more rights and can participate in decisions. The car swerving sharply to the right shows that, even with challenges, most people prefer democracy over authoritarian rule.

Authoritarianism means one leader or a small group holds power and limits the freedoms of others. In this system, leaders often control the media and stop people from speaking against them. Linz and Stepan say that authoritarian leaders “use their power to stop opposition and stay in control, even if it means taking away freedom” (Linz & Stepan, 1996, p. 52). While these governments may seem stable, they do not allow people to express themselves or make progress in the long term.

Democracy, on the other hand, is a system where everyone has a say. People can vote, share their ideas, and help decide how their country is run. Dahl says democracy works best when people can “participate effectively and have equal votes,” ensuring the government listens to the people (Dahl, 1998, p. 85). Democracy can be hard to manage, but it creates a system where people have rights and can contribute to society.

The highway split in the meme represents these two systems. The left road, authoritarianism, looks smooth but comes at the cost of personal freedom. The right road, democracy, may be harder to follow, but it offers equality and freedom. The car moving toward democracy shows the hope for a better, fairer future, even though the journey is not always easy.

Australia and Afghanistan show how these systems work in real life. Australia is a democracy where people can vote freely, and the government is open to its citizens. Afghanistan, with a history of authoritarian governments, has struggled with limited freedoms and unstable rule. These examples show why it’s important to protect democracy and understand how easily countries can lose it.

I would give myself 14.5 out of 15 for this assignment. The meme explains the concept well, and the essay is clear and connects to class readings and real-world examples. I cited my sources properly, but I think I could have explained the examples of Australia and Afghanistan in more detail.
