Week 11

Both Switzerland and the UAE differ with regard to their economic systems, shaped in large part by their resources. Switzerland possesses a developed and highly diversified economy, with most emphasis on financial services, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and a large welfare state. The UAE, although having a mixed economy dominated by oil and gas, has managed to diversify into tourism, aviation, and real estate sectors in recent decades in an effort to reduce its dependence on oil.

Both countries face different economic challenges. Switzerland faces the high cost of living and the problem of an aging population, which may impact the provision of public services. The UAE’s key challenge remains the economy’s dependency on oil revenues, which makes it subject to price fluctuations, and the problems it faces, firstly due to the large foreign labor force and secondly because of the labor rights of this overseas workforce.

Switzerland is a leading partner in international trade, focusing on high-value exports in luxury and financial services, whereas the UAE has become an international hub for trade, tourism, and finance from cities like Dubai. Both these countries are member states of key international organizations such as the UN, WTO, and other trade-related bodies while enjoying good economic ties worldwide.
