Essay: Federalism vs. Unitarism

Introduction

Each system has its strengths and weaknesses, and the choice depends on factors like a country’s size and diversity. What is Federalism?

Federalism is all about sharing power between the national government and smaller, local governments. It works well in countries that are big or diverse because it lets regions handle their own issues while still being part of a larger national system. For example, the United States uses federalism by giving states control over things like education and healthcare, while the federal government takes care of defense and foreign policy. What is Unitarism?

On the other hand, unitarism keeps most of the power at the national level. Countries like France and the UK follow this system, where the central government makes most of the big decisions. This can make things simpler and more efficient because there’s less debate between levels of government. However, it can also lead to problems when local areas feel ignored. As we discussed in class, “Unitarism allows for uniform policies but can overlook regional differences” (Author, Year). This approach works best in smaller or more homogenous countries where local governments don’t need as much independence.

Explaining the Meme
