AUSTRALIA / AFGHANISTAN

Australia is located in the Oceania region, situated in the Southern Hemisphere, surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is a highly developed nation, and its nearest neighbors include Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand. In contrast, Afghanistan lies in South Asia, sharing borders with countries such as Pakistan to the east, Iran to the west, and several Central Asian nations like Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to the north. These two countries are not only in different regions but also differ greatly in terms of their political and economic conditions.

Australia

• Population: Approximately 26 million people.
• GDP (Gross Domestic Product): Around $1.7 trillion in 2023.
• GDP per Capita: About $65,000 in 2023.

• Primary Education Levels: Many children, especially girls, struggle to access education.

Other important statistics

Unemployment: Australia’s unemployment rate is low, about 3.5%, while Afghanistan has a higher rate of 11-13% ​(IndexMundi – Country Facts)​(Human Development Reports).

Access to clean water: Nearly everyone in Australia has access to clean water, but in Afghanistan, only around 67% of people have this basic need ​(Human Development Reports).

How are these countries similar on these indicators?

Both Australia and Afghanistan have indigenous populations that face different challenges.

They’ve both faced periods of political instability, though Australia is much more stable today.

How both are different?

Development: Australia is a wealthy and highly developed country with a strong economy and high life expectancy. In contrast, Afghanistan is less developed, with lower income, higher infant mortality, and a much lower literacy rate.

Political Systems: Australia is a stable democracy, while Afghanistan continues to face instability under the Taliban.

Economy: Australia’s economy is based on industries like mining and services, while Afghanistan’s economy depends on agriculture and foreign aid.

These two countries would be classified as Most Different Systems (MDS) in comparative politics, as they have significant differences in terms of economy, governance, and social development.
